Newport Hellenic Dancers

Mission Statement

To teach the youth of our community a variety of Greek Dances, and instill a love for dancing that will last them a lifetime. To foster an appreciation of the traditions behind the songs and dances, and create a connection to the rich heritage of our forefathers.

In 2003 Xanthoula and Vaggeli Giannopoulos started a dance group, and taught some basic traditional dances (Tsakoniko, Pogonisio, Sta Tria, Kalamatiano and Hassaposerviko) to a small group of children. That summer, eight young dancers performed at our festival; the oldest one was seven years old, and the youngest one was three.

As the years passed, and the group expanded, the types of dances widened. The Newport Hellenic Dancers has now been going strong for over 15 years. The group welcomes all the young people of our community who are interested in learning and performing a variety Greek dances, forming friendships, and having fun.

The biggest performance is at our annual Hellenic Fest in July and practices start a few months before.  The Hellenic Dancers also periodically perform throughout the year at other events.

In 2018, the group was taken over by Anna Kyriakides who continues the wonderful tradition of instilling this love of Greek dancing in our young people.  Please contact Anna Kyriakides if you are interested in joining the Newport Hellenic Dancers.
