Please plan to join your St Spyridon family for a Virtual Good Friday retreat on April 17th at 2pm!
From Marianne Menas, our Sunday School Director:
We would like to have a virtual retreat this Friday for Good Friday. It will be different from what we are used to, but it is important for the children to realize the importance of this day as Orthodox Christians. This is our plan:
|2pm||Father will start the zoom meeting with a brief 10 minute talk to the children.|
|2:10pm||Children will meet with Marianne on zoom to work on the craft project. Families are asked to look around their house for the items listed below which will be needed for the retreat.|
|3pm||Have kids “attend” the Vespers of Removal service of Christ from the Cross via Facebook livestream. Father will take the body of Christ down from the cross, wrap it in a white sheet, and take it to the altar.|
|While Fr. Aaron is carrying out the removal of Christ from the cross in the service, do it yourselves at home. Try to have a child hold a lit or non lit candle while an older child or adult carries the body (icon) of Jesus wrapped in the white sheet. Your kids can feel a true part of this liturgical commemoration (anamnesis) which by God’s grace could be a very powerful experience and long term-memory.|
See below for instructions on the kouvouklion craft (look to the top of this post to see some examples of some creative ways people have made their own). Our materials are a suggestion of one way to do it, be as creative as you want!
Suggested materials for the Kouvouklion
- Small box
- Tissue paper
- Coloring page of Jesus (see below for one example you can download)
- 4 toilet paper rolls (optional)
- White sheet
- Icon of Jesus
- Feel free to be creative if you don’t have these materials or if you or your children have other ideas how to create these things. Prizes for originality. (See below for various creative ones that other people have done).
Any questions do not hesitate to email Marianne Menas.
When you are finished, please email your photos to Aliki Cooper so that we can share your beautiful work on the church Facebook page as the entire community will be lifted by seeing the work of our children!
Zoom information will be distributed via email to the church mailing list on Thursday evening. Check with Marianne Menas if you have not received the Zoom details by 1pm on Friday, April 17th.
